The Pino Pascali Foundation designed and promotes the festival Art/Movie, dedicated to the relation between art and cinema. Santa Nastro is in charge of organising this second edition of the festival. As part of this festival, the Foundation presents an important event. In fact, on the 1st of June at 8 pm the film dedicated to William Kentridge will be shown simultaneously in Museums of Contemporary Art around the world: New York, Beijing, Athens, Istanbul, Oaxaca, Dubai, Toronto, Lisboa, Belgrade, Buenos Aires, Leòn, Tallinn, Zagreb, Canary Islands, Australia, and in Italy at the PAC in Milan, the Macro in Rome, Mambo in Bologna, Rivoli Castle in Turin, Cantieri della Zisa and Riso in Palermo, Mart in Trento and Rovereto. The biggest artwork ever exhibited in Rome, ‘Triumphs and Laments’ is explained in an art movie in which meanings, charm and languages of Kentridge’s work are translated in the language of cinema.
Famous for his drawings, his animated films and his theatre plays, William Kentridge has been working over the last 12 years at “Triumphs and Laments”, his immense tribute to Roman history. The frieze is 550 metres long and is made up of 90 icons which are 10 metres high. It was realised on the banks of the river Tiber and represents the glories, triumphs and defeats of the eternal city: from Remo’s assassination to Pasolini, from Bernini to La Dolce Vita, to the political refugees emergency. However, “Triumphs and Laments” will fade in the space of a few years. This is because, differently from the Colosseum or the Pantheon, “Triumphs and Laments” is an ephemeral work of art. Kentridge’s icons have been sprayed on the white Travertine of the Tiber river’s banks. Therefore, the organic layer that has been removed to create this work of art will soon build up again and in the space of a few years will take with it all the images of this great frieze. Kentridge’s artwork will then disappear for ever and this film will be the only witness of its existence.
The film follows the artist from Johannesburg to Rome for a period of two years leading up to the performance which inaugurated the artwork. The film compares Triumphs and Laments to the main issues that are dear to the artist such as the fight against racial discrimination and the difficult connection between landscape and memory. Directed by Giovanni Troilo and produced by Andrea Patierno and Beatrice Bulgari, in collaboration with Sky Arte HD, RAI Cinema, Lia Rumma and Tevereterno, the film had its international premiere at Rome’s International Festival. Distribution will take on a particular form: in addition to international distribution of the film through the traditional channels of festivals and television, the film will also be shown in art museums across the world. Director and producers are working closely with the most important artists and gallery owners to create an art film that becomes artwork. A revolutionary process that allows to give a more thorough insight into the work of the artist, which can today also be enjoyed by its most natural audience, the museum goers all over the world.
